A musique concréte piece using sounds from a nocturnal wander along Lower Manhattan’s McDougal Street. I recorded with a portable zoom recorder the dynamic of this “nightly routine”, trying to capture and evoke the essence of the experiences shared by strangers when they meet at a place of release and decompression. The sounds come from an exchange between a bartender and a bar regular - a former Vietnam war veteran - whom she introduces to a Vietnamese friend, breaking the cycle of judgment and prejudice.
This piece is inspired by the Elektronischemusik aesthetic of creating sounds with synthesizers but using them to imitate sounds of nature. By using analogue and digital synths, I tried to be as faithful to the natural sounds as possible without losing the electronic texture and added a layer of harmony and melody for accompaniment. The aim of this piece is to make the listener reflect on the fact that nature is irreplaceable and we need to change our ways to avoid catastrophe.
